Be SunSmart This Holiday Season

Summer in South Africa is a season of long days, warm evenings, and an irresistible pull to the outdoors. Whether it’s a coastal escape, a mountain hike, or a relaxed braai with family, the December holidays invite us to recharge under the sun.

But there’s a fine line between enjoying the sunshine and underestimating its power. That golden tan you bring back to the office in January may feel like a holiday souvenir, yet, dermatologists agree it’s actually your skin’s visible response to damage (CANSA, 2024).

South Africa’s Sunshine Comes with a Warning

South Africa consistently records some of the highest ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels in the world, which means skin damage can occur faster here than in many other countries. Estimates suggest that 70 – 90 % of cutaneous melanomas and virtually all non-melanoma skin cancers (keratinocyte cancers) are attributable to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. (Cancer Atlas, 2024)

CANSA’s SunSmart Campaign reminds us that sunburn can develop in as little as 15 minutes, and the harm is both permanent and cumulative. Even when skies are cloudy, UV rays still penetrate through and reflect off sand, water, and concrete. Over a lifetime, this repeated exposure can lead to premature ageing, eye damage, and most critically, skin cancer.

The Skin Cancer Numbers Are Rising

Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in South Africa, and recent data show an upward trend worldwide. CANSA reports that tens of thousands of South Africans are diagnosed annually with non-melanoma skin cancers (such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma), while melanoma, though less common, is the most aggressive form of the disease (CANSA, 2024).

Contrary to popular belief, anyone can develop skin cancer. People with fair skin are more susceptible, but darker skin tones are not immune. The protective pigment melanin offers some defence, yet cases among individuals with medium-to-dark complexions are increasing, particularly on areas like the hands, feet, and lower legs where sun protection is often overlooked.

The Myth of the “Healthy Tan”

It’s time to retire the idea that a tan equals vitality. A tan is your body’s attempt to protect itself from further UV injury, and every shade deeper is evidence of cellular stress. As CANSA succinctly puts it: there is no such thing as a healthy tan.

Artificial tanning methods are equally unsafe. Indoor tanning devices emit concentrated UV radiation that dramatically increases melanoma risk. The World Health Organization (2024) classifies tanning beds as carcinogenic to humans, placing them in the same category as tobacco and asbestos.

Smart Protection for Every Summer Day

Enjoying the outdoors safely is simple when you build a few protective habits into your routine. CANSA’s SunSmart guidelines recommend:
  • Limit sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. – seek shade whenever possible.
  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 – 50) 20 minutes before heading outside, and reapply every two hours, after swimming, or towel-drying.
  • Use CANSA-endorsed sunscreen products that comply with European Colipa Standards.
  • Cover up: wear tightly woven fabrics, wide-brimmed hats, and UV400-rated sunglasses.
  • Perform monthly skin checks using CANSA’s “Spot the Spot” guide, and book annual screenings at a CANSA Care Centre.
  • Teach children early: Two episodes of severe sunburn before age 18 can significantly increase skin cancer risk later in life.
These small actions protect your skin and your long-term health.

Looking Ahead: Safeguard Your Health and Your Future

As you unwind this festive season and plan for the year ahead, take a moment to reflect on how you’re protecting your wellbeing, inside and out. Prevention starts with daily habits like sunscreen and hydration, but it extends to being prepared for life’s unexpected health challenges, too.

If you don’t yet have medical aid or gap cover, consider making it part of your new-year plan. Unexpected medical events, including cancer treatment, can be financially overwhelming without the right support.

At Securitas® Financial Group, we believe that genuine peace of mind comes from being covered, for today’s sunshine and tomorrow’s surprises. As you enjoy South Africa’s beautiful summer, remember: stay SunSmart, stay protected, and stay healthy.
